I can see that the warmth
That comes from the floor
Isn’t from the steam heater
Anciently guarding this outpost
From the air we regard as an enemy
Cold—respectful—invigorating.
As I watched casually
The family geared for their fight
Struggling with ties and shoes and lapels
Layering to do battle with the cold
And rush to start a day as any other
Returning the house to quiet
So the cats could lie in popular places.
